Take a closer look at the pioneering design strategy of the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games and its lasting legacy in a series of guided tours of Japan House London’s new exhibition Tokyo 1964: Designing Tomorrow led by members of the exhibition curatorial team and others.

Guests can discover the innovative architects, designers and engineers behind the Games’ iconic and influential graphic design and sporting venues during a tour which reveals behind-the-scenes insights into the exhibition curation process.

Please note that it is necessary to book to participate in a Gallery Tour and places are limited. Each tour will last 45 minutes and will begin in front of the Gallery on Japan House London's Lower Ground floor promptly at the start time.

About the Tour Leaders

Simon Wright is Programming – Director at Japan House London. He has over 30 years’ experience of either working in, or with, Japan - notably his work with the Embassy of Japan in London curating exhibitions and programming events with an emphasis on innovation and emerging Japanese talent. He has been with the Japan House project from the beginning, bringing insight and innovation. He works closely with a wide variety of content holders from Japan on a daily basis and is passionate about allowing activities to form through co-creation and co-production. For Simon, Japan House London is a place to discover and explore how Japanese tradition informs both the present and the future.

David Phillips is an artist, graphic and architectural designer, educator and author. Educated at St. Martin’s School of Art, London South Bank University and the Royal College of Art, he has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in both Fine Art and Architecture. David has over 25 years’ experience teaching design and architecture at UAL and Kingston University. Currently he is course director at the University of Herefordshire for the MA online design programmes. He has a longstanding interest in Japanese design and architecture. His other interests include heraldry, poetry and football. www.tenfields.com

Yamashita Megumi was born in Yokohama, Japan and spent a part of her childhood in Delhi, India. She has been based in London since the early 1990s. Since graduating in MA Museum Studies from University College London, she has been working as a journalist specialising in design and architecture. Travelling extensively around the world, she writes articles and reports for multiple publications in Japan, the UK and USA. She has been a regular contributor to Casa Brutus magazine since 2000. Megumi is also a consultant, organising design and architecture tours, curating exhibitions, and giving talks and lectures. www.architabi.com’

 

The exhibition Tokyo 1964: Designing Tomorrow is on display in the Japan House Gallery from 5 August until 7 November 2021.
