SCREENING: Construction Record of the 1964 Olympic Gymnasium

Take a deeper look at one of the films featured in the exhibition Tokyo 1964: Designing Tomorrow by enjoying a screening in the Hall of a 25-minute film which documents the construction of the Yoyogi Gymnasium by Shimizu Corporation.

Produced in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, this short film provides dramatic contemporary footage of the construction of the iconic building designed by Japanese acclaimed architect Tange Kenzo, highlighting the design of complex and innovative suspension roof structures through animated diagrams.

The building, constructed to a tight deadline, was an unprecedented structure at that time and represented Japan’s emerging prowess in global architecture.

Duration of the film: 25 minutes. Language: English
