Try your hand at sashiko embroidery while learning about local revitalization through craft in Iwate Prefecture in this workshop held as part of TŌHOKU 3.11 Forward to the Future, a series of events and displays exploring the recovery of the Tōhoku region of north-eastern Japan.
Sashiko is a form of Japanese embroidery that involves stitching and quilting fabric. The Otsuchi Sashiko brand originated from the Otsuchi Reconstruction Sashiko Project, an initiative started up by women in Otsuchi in Iwate Prefecture who had lost their livelihoods through the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Its aim was to help them rediscover joy and hope in life through needlework. In this workshop, participants can try their hand at sashiko using kits developed by the Otsuchi Sashiko Project.
