Colour your own ‘roly-poly’ toy at Japan House London while learning about craft toys from the Tōhoku region of north-eastern Japan.
Discover folk toys from Fukushima Prefecture by colouring your own Okiagari Kobōshi in this workshop held as part of TŌHOKU 3.11 Forward to the Future, a series of events and displays exploring the recovery of the Tōhoku region of north-eastern Japan.
Okiagari Kobōshi are small folk toys from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. The papier-mâché dolls are adored as a symbol of resilience and perseverance because they stand up immediately after they fall over. They are an indispensable lucky charm for families in Aizu, where there is a tradition to buy one more doll than the number of members of the family every year.
In this workshop, participants have an opportunity to colour their own ‘roly-poly’ toy from Fukushima.
