Explore the filmography of renowned actor Mifune Toshirō with a free screening of the timeless Seven Samurai (1954) by Kurosawa Akira.
As a second instalment in Japan House London’s film season ‘Windows on Mifune’ which explores the filmography of renowned actor Mifune Toshirō through his collaboration with director Kurosawa Akira, we are delighted to offer two free screenings of the timeless masterpiece Seven Samurai (1954).
Considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai has influenced the work of other internationally acclaimed directors such as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, as well as westerns and action films such as John Sturges’ Hollywood remake The Magnificent Seven (1961).
When 16th-century farmers whose village is repeatedly attacked every year by merciless bandits ask an elderly, masterless samurai for help, offering nothing but food in return, he hesitantly agrees and assembles a band of warriors to defend and train the villagers.
With its straightforward plot, superb camera work and an influence which extends to action movies made to this day, Seven Samurai also boasts one on Mifune’s most remarkable performances. Far from the idea of the noble and brave samurai, his character Kikuchiyo is temperamental, imperfect and often provides an aspect of comic relief, as he is only a farm boy who had wanted to become a samurai: bringing on screen one of his most sophisticated roles, Mifune manages to entertain and be taken seriously at the same time.
Although often remembered as the main character and leader of the group of samurai, he is actually only a secondary character but his raw acting prowess and captivating figure are so intense that the audience’s attention is inevitably drawn towards him.
This film is in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 207 minutes. Please note that this movie is rated PG and is therefore not considered suitable for an audience younger than 8 years old unaccompanied.
