WAVE Late

Explore Japan House London’s WAVE exhibition after-hours with an evening of art, VJ & DJ sets, workshops and talks.

Join special guests including artist and WAVE exhibition co-curator Hiro Sugiyama for an evening of art, VJ and DJ sets, workshops, drawing demonstrations and spotlight talks celebrating the creativity, colour and chaos of Japan House London’s exhibition WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphics Arts.

The programme includes:

VJ Performance by WAVE Curator Hiro Sugiyama with DJ Set by Takahiko

Catch a special VJ performance by artist and WAVE curator Hiro Sugiyama. Sugiyama blends and manipulates various video sources to create a captivating real-time mix of imagery synchronized to a DJ set by London based DJ, electronic artist and music producer Takahiko (also known as DJ Takaki).

Late-Night Exhibition Viewing & Gallery Spotlight Talks

Enhance your after-hours visit to the WAVE exhibition with a series of short spotlight talks taking a closer look at selected artworks and featured artists by special guest speakers and Japan House London team members.

The full programme, to be published shortly, includes a spotlight talk by WAVE co-curator Hiro Sugiyama, whose own work ‘Diana’ is featured in the exhibition.

Spotlight talks last about 15 to 30 minutes and begin inside the Gallery in front of the selected artwork promptly at the start time.

Drop-in Workshop: Make Your Own WAVE Badge

Create your own WAVE-inspired badge. Guests can choose from a number of ready-made badge designs based on fragments of some of the 60 works featured in the exhibition by leading and emerging Japanese illustrators, artists and designers, or use their creativity to design their own original badge.

*Participation is on a first-come first-served basis. Due to limited resources, each guest can make a maximum of two badges.

Drop-in Drawing Demonstrations with Artist Hara Takayuki

Experience a live drawing demonstration by UK based artist Takayuki Hara. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Hara’s work evolves from an ephemeral composition of disjointed memories, the notion of ‘Home’ and temporary sense of belonging. His work has been exhibited widely in the UK, and internationally including United States, Germany and Poland, and numerous Art Fairs across the globe. Recently his work was shown in the European Parliament in Brussels, and he was commissioned to have a solo exhibition at Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Krakow, Poland in 2016.

Drop-in Workshop: WAVE-inspired Exquisite Corpse

Based on the ‘Exquisite Corpse’ surrealist collaborative drawing game, guests are invited to co-create a bizarre and fantastical artwork. While devising their creation, participants are encouraged to take inspiration from some of the surreal, cute and sometimes monstrous creatures appearing in works from the WAVE exhibition, some of which draw from traditions of yōkai, mysterious supernatural beings inhabiting Japanese folklore, literature, art and popular culture.

*Participation is on a first-come first-served basis.
