As part of London Festival of Architecture, get behind-the-scenes insights into the design and development of the exhibition,The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests, with a special guided tour led by Japan House London’s Director of Programming, Simon Wright.
During the tour, Simon explores the architectural and carpentry traditions that shape Japan’s wooden buildings. He highlights the mastery of Japanese carpenters, who have developed specialized tools and techniques to harness the individual properties of wood, creating structures of remarkable beauty and complexity – from refined teahouses to majestic temples and shrines designed to withstand wind, snow, and earthquakes.
The talk, appropriate for all audiences, begins in front of the Gallery on Japan House London’s lower ground floor promptly at 18:00 and lasts approximately 40 minutes. Questions are encouraged.
The exhibition The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests is on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 12 March until 6 July 2025.
