The Birth of Fashion: Trends, Aesthetics, and Edo Kimono with Narumi Hiroshi (Japan Foundation Series)

This event is now fully booked, but you can join the waiting list on the Japan Foundation website.

Join The Japan Foundation, London, for a special talk examining kimono within the emerging fashion culture of Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868).

Sociologist and Japanese fashion theorist Professor Narumi Hiroshi discusses how trends and aesthetics surrounding kimono came into being and changed over the course of this period, a time during which many notable cultures flourished. Paying close attention to the trends seen among the groups active at the time – those in power, industry insiders, creators, performers, and young people – Narumi also explores in what ways kimono constituted fashion, and to what extent a trail-blazing fashion culture emerged.

This event is held as part of The Japan Foundation Seminar Series at Japan House London organized by The Japan Foundation, London with support from Japan House London.
