Founded in 1911 in Hiroshima Prefecture, Sailor Pen was the first company to manufacture fountain pens in Japan. Learn about the history of Sailor Pen and the evolution of its writing instruments – from the signature 1911 model, to the Rei Series – crafted with ‘urushi’ (‘Japanese lacquer’) – and the TUZU, winner of Best Fountain Pen in the 2025 Japanese Stationery Awards.
As no pen is complete without the right ink, visitors can also explore and test 100 shades from Sailor Pen’s ink range in store.
About Sailor Pen
The Sailor Pen Company was founded in 1911 by Sakata Kyugoro in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and was the first company to domestically manufacture fountain pens in Japan. In 1926, the Imperial Prince Hirohito visited the factory in an effort to encourage domestic industry, and this greatly raised the profile of the company across the country. The Sailor fountain pen is renowned for both the beautiful aesthetic of its crafted body with its gold nib and the functionality of an uncompromised writing experience. In recent years, when the G7 Summit was held in Hiroshima City, the leaders of member states were each given a lacquered Sailor fountain pen as a gift.
