Book curator Haba Yoshitaka is joined in conversation with renowned manga artist Tagame Gengoroh to discuss his ground-breaking work ‘My Brother’s Husband’.
An author of dozens of graphic novels and stories translated into multiple languages, ‘My Brother’s Husband’ is Tagame’s first title for all ages. Beautifully illustrated, the series is a moving, complex and often heart-breaking depiction of the struggle for gay acceptance in contemporary Japan. Critically acclaimed both domestically and internationally, it has earned Tagame multiple awards including the Japan Media Arts Award for Outstanding Work of Manga from The Agency of Cultural Affairs.
About the Speakers
Tagame Gengoroh was born in 1964 and lives in Tokyo. After graduating from Tama University of Art, Tagame worked as an art director while writing manga and prose fiction, contributing illustrations for various magazines. In 1994, he cofounded the epochal G-Men Magazine and by 1996 he was working full-time as an openly gay artist. He is the author of dozens of graphic novels and stories which have been translated into many languages. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries across Europe and America. The multiple award-winning ‘My Brother’s Husband’ marks his first all-age title.
Haba Yoshitaka, curator of the Japan House London Library, is a Book Director and representative of BACH, as well as an associate lecturer at Waseda University and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. In order to create opportunities for people to have greater access to books and pick up unknown books, Haba produces shop floors, library displays and reading areas that connect book stores and different industries. Haba is a book connoisseur, his love of books goes beyond book curation to include writing and editing.
