The new Japan House London film season The maverick visionary: the cinematic world of Suzuki Seijun begins with Tokyo Drifter (1966), one of the director’s most iconic and influential works.
Ostensibly a yakuza (Japanese mafia) film, Tokyo Drifter transforms the conventions of the genre through its striking visual design, bold colour palette and highly stylized approach to storytelling. The film stars Watari Tetsuya, one of the most popular and enduring screen actors in post-war Japan, as a former yakuza determined to leave his past behind, yet destined to drift from place to place. Watari also performs the film’s memorable title song, which recurs throughout the narrative as a key musical motif.
Frequently cited as one of the defining works of Suzuki’s career, Tokyo Drifter exemplifies the artistic freedom and experimentation that would make him one of the most admired cult directors in world cinema.
The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 83 mins.
