Japan House London is delighted to present two free screenings of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) as the finale of the Focus on Kon Satoshi film season exploring the filmography of one of the greatest masters of Japanese animation.
After presenting deeply unsettling and thought-provoking masterpieces by Kon such as, Paprika and Perfect Blue, and the melancholic Millenium Actress, we end the season on a brighter and lighter note. Created in 2003, the adventure-comedy Tokyo Godfathers is a life-affirming, yet not sugar-coated, perfect example of Christmas family entertainment.
Loosely based on Peter B. Kyne’s novel Three Godfathers, this animated comedy offers yet a different insight into Kon’s ingenious imaginary and narrative skills. The film’s plot follows three homeless people, who find an abandoned baby girl on Christmas Eve and decide to set on a mission to find her parents. Every one of the three protagonists has a story of their own – stories not necessarily often featured in the comedy movies. Experiences of discrimination, abuse and loss had driven the film’s characters onto the streets of Tokyo, where on a snowy winter day they unexpectedly find, not only a helpless baby in need, but also each other and themselves. For a brief, yet lifechanging moment, they become a family and companions in a wintry urban journey towards something new and good.
