Ambient Sound with Yuri Suzuki

In collaboration with sound artist and designer, Yuri Suzuki, this interactive booth display explores Suzuki’s work with ambient sound through the mediums of both digital and analogue technologies.

The display features the Ambient Machine and windchimes from the Chimes project.

Ambient Machine

The Ambient Machine by Yuri Suzuki, in collaboration with E&Y, was designed to facilitate ‘non-active listening’ allowing users to create their own background ambience through the selection of thirty-two individual switches. The switches control eight different sound sources, as well as volume, reverb, BMP speed, pause, and play, providing all of the tools to create a fully customizable soundscape. Whilst each sound can be enjoyed on its own, they are designed to give room to the others, ensuring that none is lost no matter what the combination.

The machine is indicative of Suzuki’s practice, which explores the relationship between people and their environments, questioning how both music and sound evolve to create personal experiences.

Chimes

In collaboration with Swarf Hardware and New York-based graphic designer Matt Willey, this windchime was created by Yuri Suzuki as part of the Chimes project.

Taking the form of two decorative hanging bells, a windchime, and a shopkeeper’s bell, the Chimes collection is a celebration of analogue sound with each tone carefully curated to perfectly suit its environment. The windchime is a modern interpretation of Japanese wind bells, creating a light and meditative sound that is triggered by the movement of an oblong of paper hanging beneath that is crafted from recycled coffee cups. The combination of these elements works to create ambient and soothing sounds, aiming to offer a daily moment of auditory delight.
