Nishikigoi (brocaded carp), are a type of ornamental fish that have lived in Japan for hundreds of years.
They are known as ‘living jewels’ on account of their colourful and ornate silk brocade-like patterns, of which no two fish have the same. This peaceful variety of fish is particularly revered among the people of Hiroshima, where nishikigoi have lived in the castle moat since the Sengoku period (1467-1615CE) and castle is affectionately nicknamed ‘Carp Castle.’
