Design your own pictogram using an activity sheet created in collaboration with the Nippon Design Center.
Pictograms are simple, easy-to-understand symbols that help us navigate the world without words. Found everywhere from maps and museum signs to mobile phones, they bridge language and cultural barriers, making them especially useful when travelling.
Designers at the renowned Nippon Design Center created the Experience Japan Pictograms project as a visual guide for visitors to Japan, introducing everyday life, customs and cultures in a clear and engaging way.
Now it’s your turn. Read the tips from Nippon Design Center’s designers and create a pictogram that represents a landmark, food or activity from your hometown or home country you would like to share with others.
This activity sheet is inspired by the exhibition Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 30 July until 9 November 2025.
Share your completed designs with us on social media by tagging @JapanHouseLdn.
