GRAND SUMO Highlights at Japan House London   

Daily screenings of NHK WORLD-JAPAN’s GRAND SUMO Highlights are taking place at Japan House London to showcase the professional sumo tournaments of 2024. 

Grand Sumo Tournaments (or honbasho) are held six times a year in various parts of Japan, with May’s tournament known as the Natsu Basho (summer tournament) taking place at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.  Each tournament lasts 15 days and features the top rikishi (wrestlers) competing in the ring for the prized Emperor’s Cup.  

Broadcast in English by NHK WORLD-JAPAN, GRAND SUMO Highlights takes you ringside with play-by-play commentary on the day’s action and background information on this sport which originated in Japan and boasts a history of more than 1500 years.

  • 12-26 May, 17:30-18:00 BST 
  • 14-28 July, 17:30-18:00 BST 
  • 8-22 September, 17:30-18:00 BST 
  • 10-24 November, 16:30-17:00 GMT 

 

The programme GRAND SUMO Preview will also be shown the Friday before each tournament.  

Screenings will be shown in The Shop of Japan House London on Kensington High Street, as well as the Hall on the Lower Ground Floor. Booking is not required, and admission is free. Due to other events at Japan House London, screenings may sometimes only be shown on the Ground Floor.
