Items from Design Studio nendo (including a series of knots to represent each country in the 2019 Rugby World Cup) are featured alongside the manga cat robot Doraemon in this booth display.

nendo

Design studio nendo was established by architect and designer Satō Ōki in 2002. Based in Tokyo and Milan, nendo's work spans architecture, interior, product and graphic design, and has won numerous international design awards, including from Wallpaper (UK) and ELLE DÉCOR magazines. Works by nendo can be found in the collections of museums around the world, including the MOMA in New York (USA), Centre Georges Pompidou (France) and the V&A (UK).  

nendo is currently working on the design of the new TGV high-speed train for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and is also responsible for the overall production and design of the Japanese Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo to be held in 2025. 

Doraemon

Doraemon is a leading Japanese manga series by Fujiko F Fujio, first serialized in magazines in 1970. It was later adapted into an animated television series in 1979. Doraemon is a cat-shaped robot who comes from the 22nd century to change the fate of Nobita, a clumsy and lazy boy. Everyday life is made more fun and exciting as Doraemon pulls out various secret gadgets from his pocket. 

The manga has been translated into 12 languages in 17 countries and the animation has been broadcast in 55 countries, with a total of 300 million copies of Doraemon books having been sold worldwide. Doraemon TV series and films have been a staple of the childhoods of many Japanese people, and in turn these have influenced many creators in adulthood.
