An Introduction to Kumihimo Braiding
組紐ワークショップ

Get a first-hand experience of the beauty and intricate detail of kumihimo silk braiding during a beginner’s workshop at Japan House London.
Literally translating as ‘joining threads together’, kumihimo has been practised in Japan for over 1,300 years and is characterized by vivid colours and intricate patterns.
During each small-group workshop, led by the Japan House London Visitor Experience team, participants can gain an understanding of the basic principles of kumihimo while creating a braided cord using silk threads and a marudai, a round braiding stand mounted on legs that makes it easy to braid a variety of kumihimo, even for beginners.
The silk threads and marudai used at this workshop have been provided by Domyo, a Tokyo-based workshop that has been hand-braiding silk threads since 1652.
The workshops are part of a programme of events surrounding the exhibition Kumihimo: Japanese Silk Braiding by Domyo. on display in the Japan House London Gallery until 11 June 2023.
