Making Chopsticks with MARUNAO

The wooden chopsticks made by the Marunao company of Tsubame-Sanjo are renowned for their soft feel, pleasing texture, and comfortable-to-hold octagonal shape that makes it easy to pick up food. In this workshop led by expert craftspeople from Marunao, participants will learn wood whittling techniques so they can carve their own set of wooden chopsticks.

About the Maker:

Founded in 1939, Marunao originally produced sumi-tsubo (literally ‘ink pot’), a tool used by carpenters for making straight lines similar to a chalk line. In recent years, they have combined contemporary technology with their well-established woodworking mastery to create ‘tools for eating’ including their wooden chopsticks, and stationery items such as fountain pens.
