Purpose of the Role *Japanese follows

The Director – Marketing & Communications is tasked with making Japan House London a respected and recognized attraction within London’s rich cultural landscape.

The role encompasses both external and internal marketing communications responsibilities.

You will be Japan House London’s audience ambassador, identifying and engaging with new and existing audiences to achieve our audience-related KPIs. This includes expanding and building new relationships with relevant third parties and visitors to Japan House and developing and implementing marketing and communications strategies and campaigns to support this. For example:

  • Reaching out to and engaging with a diverse range of target audiences.
  • Increasing footfall to Japan House.
  • Increasing the volume of relevant traffic to the Japan House London website and engagement with it.
  • Supporting and enhancing social media presence to increase number of followers and interaction.
  • Providing metrics and reporting to demonstrate success.
  • Encouraging guests and partners to have an ongoing relationship with Japan House through the development of brand collaborations and traditional and digital media initiatives.
  • Encouraging and supporting a deeper knowledge about and appreciation of Japan, as well as contributing to creating a legacy of new and enduring relationships between Japan and the U.K.

As the guardian of the Japan House brand you will work closely with cultural practitioners, media and businesses in Japan, as well as the internal Team at Japan House to ensure the brand standards remain consistently high, and reflect an authentic expression of Japanese cultures and aesthetics

Spread over three floors and with a diverse offer covering Public Programmes, Retail and Food & Beverage, the Japan House Team needs to be kept informed and engaged. You will be responsible for devising and overseeing internal communications activity and employee engagement.

Professional Qualifications and Capabilities


  • At least seven years’ work experience in marketing and communications.
  • An undergraduate degree.
  • Japanese language skills equal to Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N2 or above, with the ability to understand and speak Japanese used in everyday situations, and in a variety of circumstances – including conversations, tele-communications, meetings, and presentations.
  • Strong, concise and persuasive communications skills.
  • Media contacts with whom you already have established working relationships.
  • Experience working with and in Japan.
  • Proven leadership and management experience in a team setting.
  • Experience working with B2B, B2C, cultural sector and government organisations.
  • Experience of developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies and integrated campaigns.
  • The ability to monitor success through gathering, analysing and reporting, insight.
  • Project planning and budgeting skills and experience.


  • Excellent written and spoken English, proficient to high business language standard
  • Extensive knowledge of Japan, including its regions and cultures
