Sugawa Makiko: Finding Beauty and Strength in Physical Impairment

Sugawa Makiko decided to draw sensual, images of fashionable women with prosthetic legs after losing her own leg to cancer as a young woman.

In this video Sugawa explains how her career has evolved since she started exploring this form directly from her hospital bed.

The line drawing Lace-up Dress, characteristic of Sugawa’s work with its erotic figure in lingerie and a prosthetic leg, is featured in the exhibition WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts.
