KYOTO Design Lab Series: Exploring Tango Chirimen – Structure

This event, held in collaboration with KYOTO Design Lab (D-lab), investigated design possibilities provided by chirimen, a type of silk crêpe made of flat-woven silk originating in the northernmost region of Kyoto Prefecture known as Tango.

The event featured Milou Voorwinden, (textile designer, Netherlands), Ueda Kaori (weave specialist and Associate Professor at Saga University of Arts, Japan), Ligia Lopes (designer and participatory design activist, Portugal), and Julia Cassim, Professor at Kyoto Design Lab at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, who reconsidered conceptually the structure and surface of chirimen and propose new and future scenarios through collaboration, materials experimentation and new graphic approaches.
