Edo Period
The Edo period in Japanese history took place between 1603 - 1867 CE. During this time, Japan was ruled by the Tokoguawa shōguns. Largely closed off to the rest of the world during this period of roughly 250 years, many popular cultural arts developed and flourished in Japan, notably kabuki (a type of stylised Japanese theatre) and ukiyo-e (colourful woodblock prints).
